Turnitin Alternatives for WordPress Courses

Every course creator, whether they use WordPress or another platform, worries about students cheating on assignments. With the arrival of AI tools, cheating has gotten even easier—and detection a lot harder. When educators go looking for a solution, most start with a name they’re familiar with: Turnitin.

The problem is that you can’t buy it. For WordPress sites, Turnitin simply isn’t an option, but there are alternatives that can work at least as well for independent course creators.

Why you can’t use Turnitin

Turnitin sells exclusively to institutions. There are no individual licenses, no single-use subscriptions, and no WordPress support. Even if individual creators could buy it, there are a number of drawbacks: pricing is opaque but expensive; they effectively require ownership of student work; and there is no WordPress integration.

A word of caution

Before we talk about plagiarism and AI detection tools, it’s worth talking about how products in the space work. Detection is useful and a data point for reviews, but it isn’t proof of cheating.

Vanderbilt University is a notable example that stopped using Turnitin’s AI detection in 2023, noting that with the claimed 1% false positive rate (which might seem low at a glance), roughly 750 papers per year would be incorrectly flagged as AI-generated. Elsewhere there are reports that essays by non-native speakers tend to get flagged more often.

None of this means detection is useless. When it’s used to flag assignments for human review, rather than issuing a verdict, it can be an effective part of grading workflows.

Standalone checkers you can buy

Unlike Turnitin, there are a variety of tools in the market that sell directly to individuals. A few of the more popular examples include:

• Copyleaks, which combines plagiarism and AI detection on credit-based plans with a handful of LMS integrations.
• Scribbr, which runs checks against a Turnitin-powered database and charges per document, typically starting at $20 USD per check.
• Originality.ai, Winston and GPTZero, which are newer tools that offer developer APIs to integrate with a variety of platforms.

Standalone document checkers can really extend the workflow, as they typically require instructors to download submissions first, upload them to a separate portal, wait for the scan, then copy results back to wherever is grading is done. When grading assignments for more than a handful of students, this gets difficult quickly.

What about WordPress plugins? Of the LMS tools that include assignment support, none offer plagiarism or AI detection. There are a handful of bridge plugins that connect to third-party services, but none offer a complete workflow solution.

Detection inside WordPress
