Quiz 3.1: Practice Without Pressure

Version 3.1 of PressPrimer Quiz is now available on WordPress.org!

After the foundation work we did in 3.0, this release is focused on the learning experience, from helping students practice without pressure to keeping retakes fresh. We also made some big email upgrades and improvements to what’s possible if you want to market to quiz-takers.

Here’s what’s new.

Practice mode

Sometimes students want a quiz to be a safe place to learn rather than being a test. That’s what Practice Mode is. When it’s turned on for a quiz, students get unlimited attempts, unlimited time, immediate feedback, and results don’t get shared. That means they’re excluded from reports and students can take them over and over to build confidence before they take on the real thing.

Better quiz retakes

If you build quizzes from question pools and large banks, you know that it can be frustrating when random question selection doesn’t consider what a student has already seen. Over multiple attempts, some students keep seeing the same questions over and over, while some questions in the pool never get seen.

Version 3.1 adds a “Prefer Unseen Questions” option for quizzes that use pools or dynamic rules. When it’s on, each new attempt picks questions the student hasn’t seen first, and then it considers repeating ones they’ve already seen. This helps to ensure that students are exposed to all questions across attempts.

Improved confidence ratings

PressPrimer Quiz originally shipped with a simple confidence checkbox, which allowed students to indicate whether or not they felt confident with their answer to a question. Version 3.1 replaces this with a solution that’s more useful: a three-level rating. Students can mark whether they have Low, Medium, or High confidence in each answer as they move through a quiz.

At the end of the quiz, students can optionally be shown a confidence section that provides feedback on their performance relative to their confidence level. Confident-but-wrong answers are a valuable learning signal that can help students focus on their weaker areas.

Better emails

Emails sent out as users complete quizzes have a new token they can optionally include: {answers_summary}. When added to an email body, a per-question recap is added to the email, including each question, the user’s selected answer, and whether it was correct. This gives users a complete view of their quiz performance without having to revisit the quiz results page.

There’s also a new email footer system. In PressPrimer Quiz > Settings > Email, there’s a new section to define your own email footer that will be used across emails sent by the plugin.

Guest leads for Uncanny Automator

If your site uses Uncanny Automator, you’ll find a new Everyone trigger for “A guest email is captured with marketing consent”. When a guest takes a quiz by entering their email address, and opts in to email marketing, this trigger fires recipes and you can run automations that include the user’s email address. The recipe might pass the user’s contact info to your CRM, a Google Sheet, a Slack notification, or whatever else you need.

The trigger only fires when guests explicitly opt in to marketing communications, so you can be sure that anything you build is based on clean, consented data.

Updating

If you’re already running PressPrimer Quiz, update through your WordPress dashboard. Note that everything that’s new in this release is opt-in, so to use the new features, you must turn them on. Existing quizzes behave exactly as they did with the 3.0 release.
