PressPrimer Quiz 3.0: A New Foundation

Version 3.0 of PressPrimer Quiz is now available on WordPress.org! It’s our biggest update ever and lays the groundwork for larger features arriving in upcoming releases. There’s a lot packed in here, including quiz templates, Anthropic Claude support, math notation, progress reset tools, guest email capture, clearer score explanations, and more. And yes, all of this is in the free version of the plugin.

Quiz templates

A typical PressPrimer quiz has around two dozen settings. While you could set things up the way you want, then duplicate it whenever you create a new quiz, it’s pretty cumbersome. Version 3.0 adds a new template system, where each template is a snapshot of the settings for a quiz and you can apply them to another quiz with a single action. Even better, when you apply a template, the system gives you a preview of exactly which settings will change.

The plugin ships with three built-in presets: Exam Simulation, Open Practice, and Standard Grading. Each includes the settings we feel best fit the respective scenario, and of course you can create your own custom templates and share them with users.

To manage the new templates, you’ll find a newTemplates tab under PressPrimer Quiz > Settings in /wp-admin/. From there, you can edit, review, and delete templates.

Building a new front-end experience

One of the bigger themes with the 3.x series will be bringing more of PressPrimer’s tools out of /wp-admin/ and onto the front end of your site. Version 3.0 ships the first piece of that: a front-end dashboard that you place on any page. Students will have access to a clean, themed portal with their quiz history and assignments, but teachers (with our premium plugins) will have access to the tools they need. The system uses your site’s existing PressPrimer styling and works across all devices.

Math notation support

PressPrimer Quiz 3.0 can now render mathematical notation in quiz questions and answers using LaTeX. When support is turned on, admins and teachers can use standard LaTeX delimiters in questions, answers, and even feedback, and we’ve built in full support across the plugin (including in reports).

Math rendering is powered by KaTeX, which is bundled directly in the plugin. There are no external requests or CDN calls, and all data stays on your server. The library is only loaded on sites that explicitly turn on math support, and once that’s done, you’ll see a new “Insert math” control on question edit pages.

Anthropic Claude AI support

PressPrimer Quiz has supported AI question generation since day one, and version 3.0 adds support for Anthropic’s Claude models alongside OpenAI. Under Settings > AI, you’ll find a new provider selection with separate keys for each provider. Choose whichever platform you want to use, enter your API key, then choose a model. The keys are always yours and calls go directly from your site to the provider.

Guest email capture

If you allow your guests to take quizzes and collect their email addresses, version 3.0 adds a consent layer and makes the address usable for marketing purposes. When the system is enabled, an optional marketing-consent checkbox is added to guest email forms (with a link to your privacy policy), and the consent and email address are captured on submission.

The consent capture is the foundation, and some additions in the premium add-ons allow you to connect to your CRM so you can build a mailing list and/or tag contacts. Note too that the email guest capture functionality works with the WordPress built-in personal-data export and erase tools, so you can honor GDPR requests for guest data using the standard WordPress workflow.

Progress reset tools

We had a few user requests to make it easier to reset quiz data for users, especially during testing. To support easier record management, there’s a new Data Tools tab under Settings. From that page, you can reset attempts for specific users, specific quizzes, or a combination of user and quiz. Every reset includes a mandatory preview so you can see exactly which records will be deleted.

Clearer score explanations

Back in version 2.3, we introduced four distinct scoring modes for multiple-answer questions. This gave users more control over grading, but it could also lead to student confusion over how they received the scores that they did.

Version 3.0 of PressPrimer Quiz addresses that. Results pages can now optionally include per-question scoring explanations that break down exactly how every multiple answer question’s score was calculated. It works for all four scoring modes and can be hidden if it doesn’t add value for your students.

Schema self-healing

We’ve seen a few situations where database migration calls can get missed (perhaps by manual file replacements via FTP) and result in missing columns that produce errors. New in 3.0 is a health check that detects and repairs issues automatically. Most sites will never notice it or need it, but behind the scenes we’re working hard to reduce the risk of errors.
