The Mastery Map gives each student a per-category picture of what they know, built from every scored answer they give anywhere in PressPrimer Quiz: regular quizzes, spaced repetition reviews, and study plan practice sessions. It lives on the Mastery screen of the front-end dashboard and updates every time the student submits answers.
How Mastery Is Measured
For each question category, mastery reflects the student’s accuracy over their most recent answers in that category, so it represents what they know now rather than a lifetime average. Old mistakes age out as new answers come in, and partial credit on multiple-answer questions counts proportionally.
Each category shows a score and one of four statuses:
- Mastered: 85% or higher, with enough answers behind it to be meaningful.
- Approaching: 60% to 84%.
- Developing: Below 60%.
- Insufficient Data: Not enough answers yet. Students see a note that these categories need a few more answers before mastery can be measured.
A weekly trend shows how the student’s overall mastery is moving over time.
Mastery and Study Plans
The Mastery Map is what powers the Focus on my weak areas option in Study Plans: practice sessions sample more heavily from the categories where mastery is lowest, and improvements show up on the map as the student practices.
Populating Mastery from Past Attempts
After updating to School 3.1 or later, mastery builds automatically from every new submission. To include the attempts students made before the update, run the Mastery Rebuild from PressPrimer Quiz > Settings > Mastery & Study Plans. The rebuild processes historical attempts in batches and can be left running in the background.
On large sites, the same rebuild is available from the command line via WP-CLI with the wp ppqs mastery command, which is handy for running it during a maintenance window.
Notes
- Categories come from your question categories, so well-categorized questions make for a more useful map. Questions without categories do not appear on the map.
- Each student sees only their own mastery.
