Branching logic lets you create adaptive quizzes that skip or jump to specific questions based on how a student answers. Instead of every student seeing the same linear sequence, you can create different paths through the quiz based on performance or specific answer choices.

Use Cases

• Adaptive difficulty: If a student misses a basic question, branch to follow-up questions that cover foundational concepts
• Skip ahead: If a student answers correctly, skip past related questions they’ve demonstrated understanding of
• Diagnostic assessments: Route students to different question sets based on their initial responses
• Early exit: End the quiz early if a student demonstrates mastery or struggles significantly

Requirements

Branching logic is available for Fixed Questions quizzes only. Dynamic quizzes that pull questions from banks using rules are not supported for branching in this version, since the question sequence isn’t known until the attempt starts.

Creating Branching Rules

To add branching logic to a quiz:

1. Navigate to PressPrimer Quiz > Quizzes and edit a fixed questions quiz.
2. Click the Branching tab.
3. Click Add Rule.
4. Configure the rule:
   • Source Question: The question that triggers the branch
   • Rule Type: When to trigger (see below)
   • Target: Where to jump (another question or end the quiz)
5. Save the quiz.

Rule Types

Three rule types are available:

Skip on Answer

Triggers when the student selects a specific answer option. You specify which answer (by its position: first answer, second answer, etc.) triggers the branch. This is useful when certain answer choices indicate the student should take a particular path.

Skip on Correct

Triggers when the student answers the question correctly. Use this to skip past related follow-up questions when a student has demonstrated understanding.

Skip on Incorrect

Triggers when the student answers the question incorrectly. Use this to branch to additional practice questions or remedial content when a student struggles.

Target Options

When a rule triggers, you can jump to:

• Another question: Skip forward to a specific question in the quiz
• End quiz: Submit the quiz immediately and show results

When skipping to another question, any questions between the source and target are skipped entirely for that attempt. The skipped questions don’t count toward scoring.

Rule Priority

When multiple rules exist for the same source question, they are evaluated in priority order. The first rule that matches is applied. You can adjust priority by dragging rules in the Branching tab interface.

For example, you might have:

1. Priority 1: If answer is “Option A”, jump to Question 5
2. Priority 2: If correct, jump to Question 3
3. Priority 3: If incorrect, jump to Question 10

If the student selects “Option A” (which happens to be correct), rule 1 fires and they jump to Question 5. Rules 2 and 3 are not evaluated.

Path Analytics

The system automatically records which paths students take through branching quizzes. You can view path data in:

• Recent Attempts report: See the path taken for individual attempts
• Quiz Detail report: See aggregate path statistics across all attempts

Path analytics help you understand how students are flowing through your quiz and identify if branches are working as intended.

Example: Adaptive Difficulty Quiz

Consider a 10-question quiz structured as:

• Questions 1-3: Basic concepts
• Questions 4-6: Remedial questions
• Questions 7-10: Advanced questions

You could set up branching rules:

• Question 3: If correct, skip to Question 7 (bypass remedial)
• Question 3: If incorrect, continue to Question 4 (enter remedial)
• Question 6: Always continue to Question 7

Students who demonstrate understanding of basics skip ahead to advanced material, while those who struggle get additional practice first.

Troubleshooting

• Branching tab not visible: Ensure the quiz uses Fixed Questions mode, not Dynamic Rules.
• Rule not triggering: Check that the rule type matches the condition. “Skip on Answer” requires selecting a specific answer option.
• Unexpected path: Check rule priorities. Higher priority rules are evaluated first.
