A trigger only fires from the day it exists. If you connect a certificate to a course that has been running for three years, the people who completed it before today get nothing. Award Past Completions finds them, shows you every one before anything is awarded, and then issues their certificates in the background.
Which Templates Qualify
The template must be published and have an active trigger, because the trigger is what tells the tool which course, quiz, or assignment to look back through. Templates without a trigger have no history to scan; manual and bulk awarding cover those (see Bulk Awarding Certificates).
One more condition: the trigger’s Issue again on repeat completion option must be off. A re-issue trigger awards a fresh certificate on every completion, so a retroactive run would duplicate certificates people already hold. The wizard refuses to proceed and explains this until the option is turned off.
Which Sources Have History
The tool reads completion history from the integration behind the trigger. The bundled integrations provide it for these trigger types:
- PressPrimer Quiz: quiz passed
- PressPrimer Assignment: assignment passed
- LearnDash, LifterLMS, Tutor LMS, and LearnPress: course completed
Running a Scan
On the Templates list, use the Award past completions row action on a template with a trigger (or navigate to Certificates > Award Past Completions). The wizard has three steps.
Scan. The tool checks each source the trigger watches and lists it with its count of past completions. For a trigger set to “Any course” or “Any quiz”, every matching course or quiz is listed separately, just as the trigger would fire for each. Large results (more than 2,000 rows) get a note that processing will run in the background in small batches.

Preview. Every completion becomes a row with the recipient, the completion date, and an outcome: Will issue, Already holds it (duplicate suppression, the same rule the trigger applies), or Skipped (no matching user account, with the reason in the Note column). Nothing has been awarded yet.
A toggle, Email each recipient their certificate, is off by default. These completions may be months or years old, and a surprise email about a course someone finished long ago tends to confuse more than delight. Turn it on if the cohort is expecting the certificates; otherwise announce them your own way.
Results. Click Award Certificates, confirm the totals, and the run starts in the background. You can leave the page and come back. When it finishes, you see how many were awarded, already held it, were skipped, or failed, with a row-by-row table and a Download CSV. If the run is interrupted, it resumes where it left off without awarding anyone twice.
Dates on Retroactive Certificates
A retroactive certificate is dated the day it is awarded, not the day the course was completed, so the credential ID, the issue date, and any validity period all count from the award. The original completion date is not lost: it is stored with the certificate as the source completion date, so a design that prints the completion date merge field shows when the course was actually finished.
