The Educator add-on activates the PressPrimer Teacher role, which lets trusted users create and manage their own groups, distribute assignments, and grade submissions — without giving them full administrator access. This article explains what teachers can and can’t do, and how data isolation works.

Role Creation

When the Educator add-on is activated, it does one of two things:

• If the PressPrimer Teacher role already exists (because PressPrimer Quiz Educator is installed), the add-on simply adds assignment-specific capabilities to the existing role.
• If the role doesn’t exist yet, the add-on creates it.

The role is shared across PressPrimer Quiz Educator and PressPrimer Assignment Educator so a single teacher user can work with both plugins.

Assigning the Teacher Role

1. Navigate to Users in your WordPress admin.
2. Edit the user you want to make a teacher.
3. In the Role dropdown, select PressPrimer Teacher.
4. Click Update User.

A user can also become a teacher automatically by being added to a group with the Teacher role — see the Adding Group Members article for details.

What Teachers Can Do

• Create, edit, and delete their own assignments
• Create and manage their own groups
• Add and remove members from groups they own
• Distribute assignments to their groups with per-group schedules
• Grade submissions from students in their groups
• Build and attach rubrics to their own assignments
• View reports for their own assignments and groups

What Teachers Can’t Do

• See or edit assignments created by other teachers or administrators
• See or grade submissions from students outside their groups
• Manage groups they don’t own
• Access plugin settings (except the License tab is not visible to teachers)
• Install or activate plugins
• Delete the plugin or access site-wide WordPress settings

Data Isolation

Teachers see only their own data. Specifically:

• Assignment lists show only assignments the teacher created.
• Submission lists and the grading queue show only submissions from members of groups the teacher owns.
• Group lists show only groups the teacher owns.
• Reports show only data from the teacher’s assignments and groups.

Administrators always see all data regardless of ownership. This means admins can step in to help with grading or group management when needed.

Removing Teacher Access

To revoke a user’s teacher access, edit their user profile and change their role back to a standard WordPress role like Subscriber. Their existing assignments, groups, and submissions are preserved but become inaccessible to them.
