The Per-Criteria Grade Breakdown report shows how students performed on each rubric criterion across all rubric-graded submissions. It’s the report to open when you want to know which criteria the cohort consistently struggles with — so you can target review sessions, refine instructions, or revisit a rubric before reusing it.
Requirements
This report draws from rubric-graded submissions only. You’ll see data once:
- At least one assignment has a rubric attached (see Creating a Rubric)
- At least one submission to that assignment has been graded using the rubric
If no rubric-graded submissions exist in the current scope, the report shows an empty state with a prompt to grade some submissions first.
Opening the Report
- Navigate to Assignments > Reports.
- Click the Per-Criteria Grade Breakdown card.
Selecting Groups
Use the group selector at the top of the report to choose which groups to include. The selector defaults to All groups I have access to, which gives the broadest cohort-level view. Pick specific groups to focus on a single section or compare multiple sections side by side.
The Per-Criterion Average View
By default, the report shows one bar per criterion. Each bar represents the average score (as a percentage of that criterion’s maximum points) across every rubric-graded submission in scope.
Bars are sorted from lowest-scoring to highest-scoring, so the criteria the cohort struggled with most appear at the top — they’re what you want to see first when you open the report.
The Level Distribution View
Click any criterion bar to see how submissions spread across the performance levels you defined for that criterion. The level distribution view answers a more specific question: for this criterion, how many students landed in each performance level?
This is useful for spotting bimodal distributions (some students get it, others don’t) versus criteria where students cluster in the middle (most are close to proficient).
Click Back to all criteria to return to the criterion averages view.
Multi-Group Comparison
When you select more than one group, each criterion shows a grouped bar — one bar per selected group — so you can compare cohort performance side by side. Use this to:
- Compare different sections taught by the same instructor
- Spot whether a difficult criterion is a cohort-wide issue or specific to one group
- Identify groups that need targeted intervention on specific skills
