Distributing an assignment to a group gives every member of that group access to the assignment with a shared schedule. Each group can have its own open date, due date, and close date for the same assignment, so Section A and Section B can work on the same assignment on different timelines.
Distributing an Assignment
- Navigate to Assignments > Groups.
- Hover over the group name, then click Assignments.
- Click Assign Assignment.
- Select an assignment from the dropdown. Only published assignments appear in this list.
- Configure the schedule options (see below).

- Click Distribute.
Schedule Options
Due Date
Set the deadline for completing the assignment. The current time is displayed in the editor to help you set accurate times. Note that:
- Due dates cannot be set in the past.
- Times are based on your WordPress site’s timezone setting.
- If the assignment’s late policy allows late submissions, students can still submit after the due date and their submission will be marked as late.
- If the assignment’s late policy is set to reject late submissions, the assignment closes at the due date for this group.
- Leave blank for distributions with no deadline.
Available From
Optionally schedule a date for the assignment to become available. Students won’t be able to start the assignment until this date and time. The “Available From” date must be before the due date if both are set.
Allow Late Submissions
When enabled, students can still complete the quiz after the due date has passed. Their submission will be marked as late. When disabled, students cannot access the assignment after the due date.
Per-Group Scheduling
One of the main reasons to distribute assignments through groups is that each group can have a different schedule for the same assignment. For example:
- Section A might have the assignment open April 1 and due April 15.
- Section B might have the same assignment open April 8 and due April 22.
Students in both groups see the same assignment content, but their deadlines follow their group’s schedule. If a student is a member of multiple groups that have the same assignment distributed with different due dates, they see the earliest close date.
Editing a Distribution
- On the group’s Assignments page, find the assigned assignment you want to edit.
- Click the Edit button (pencil icon).
- Modify the due date or start state.
- Click Update.
You cannot change which assignment is attached to a distribution after creating it. To distribute a different assignment, delete the existing distribution and create a new one.
Removing a Distribution
- On the group’s Assignments page, find the distribution.
- Click the Remove button (trash icon).
- Confirm the removal.
Removing a distribution takes the assignment off students’ assigned lists but does not delete any submissions they have already made.
Distribution Limits
- Each assignment can only be assigned once per group. To change the schedule, edit the existing distribution instead of creating a new one.
- An assignment can be distributed to multiple different groups, each with its own schedule.
- Only published assignments can be distributed. Draft assignments won’t appear in the selection list.
