Grading Submissions

PressPrimer Assignment includes a dedicated grading interface for reviewing and scoring student work. This article covers the grading queue, the grading interface, and the submission status workflow.

The Grading Queue

Navigate to Assignments > Grading to access the centralized grading queue. This page shows all submissions that need grading, sorted by submission date. You can filter the queue by assignment and sort by different columns.

The grading menu item shows a badge with the number of submissions awaiting grading, so you can see at a glance how many submissions need attention.

The Grading Interface

Grading View

Click on a submission in the grading queue (or from Assignments > Submissions) to open the grading interface. The interface uses a side-by-side layout:

  • Left Panel — Document Viewer: The student’s submitted work renders directly in the browser. PDF files display using an embedded viewer, PPTX files render as navigable slides, DOCX files are converted to HTML for preview, images display inline, and text submissions render as formatted text. You don’t need to download files to review them.
  • Right Panel — Grading Form: Enter a score, view automatic pass/fail calculation, and write text feedback. A reference panel shows the assignment’s grading guidelines so you can evaluate against your criteria without switching pages.

If a submission includes multiple files, you can switch between files using the file navigator above the document viewer.

Scoring and Feedback

Enter a score between 0 and the assignment’s maximum points. The pass/fail status calculates automatically based on the assignment’s passing score threshold. Write feedback in the text editor; this feedback is shown to the student once you release the grade.

If the submission was late and the assignment has a penalty policy, the grading form itemizes the deduction: how late the submission was, the penalty percentage applied, and the math from raw score to final score (e.g., Raw score 80 − 10 late deduction = 70 final). You enter the raw score as usual; the deduction applies automatically and the final score is what counts toward pass/fail. See Due Dates and Late Policies for how the policies work.

Submission Status Workflow

Submissions move through the following statuses:

  1. Submitted: The student has submitted work and it is awaiting grading.
  2. Grading: A grader has opened the submission (optional status, used for tracking).
  3. Graded: The grader has assigned a score and feedback.
  4. Returned: The grade and feedback have been released to the student. When an email notification is configured, the student receives an email at this point.

Viewing All Submissions

For a complete view of all submissions (not just those awaiting grading), navigate to Assignments > Submissions. This page shows every submission with filters for assignment and status.

Troubleshooting

  • If the DOCX preview shows an error, confirm that the ZipArchive PHP extension is available on your server. You can check this under Assignments > Settings > Status.
  • If submissions aren’t appearing in the grading queue, confirm that the student actually submitted (not just saved a draft) and that the assignment is in “Published” status.
