Creating an Assignment

This article covers all the settings available when creating or editing an assignment in PressPrimer Assignment. For a quick walkthrough, see Creating Your First Assignment.

To create a new assignment, navigate to Assignments > Assignments and click Add New. To edit an existing assignment, click the assignment title or hover and click Edit.

Content Fields

Title: The assignment name displayed to students (required).

Description: A short summary of the assignment. This is displayed prominently at the top of the assignment page.

Instructions: Detailed instructions for completing the assignment. Students see these on the assignment page and can refer back to them while working on their submission.

Grading Guidelines: Describe how submissions will be evaluated. This text is visible to students on the assignment page and also appears as a reference panel in the grading interface. Being transparent about evaluation criteria helps students produce better work.

Scoring

Maximum Points: The highest score possible for this assignment (default: 100). When grading, the grader enters a score between 0 and this value.

Passing Score: The minimum score required to pass (default: 60). After grading, the system automatically determines whether the submission has passed or failed based on this threshold. For LMS integrations, passing an assignment can trigger lesson completion.

Due Date & Late Policy

Set an optional Due Date for the assignment. When a due date is set, you choose what happens to late submissions: accept them with no penalty, apply a percentage penalty, or reject them entirely. Both the accept and penalty policies support an optional cutoff that closes submissions completely after a set amount of time past the due date.

Penalties can be deducted from the assignment’s maximum points or from the student’s earned score, and the grading interface itemizes the deduction automatically. Students see the due date and the full policy on the assignment page before they submit.

Submission Type

Each assignment can accept one of three submission types:

  • File Upload: Students upload one or more document files. You control which file types are accepted, the maximum file size, and the maximum number of files.
  • Text / Rich Text: Students type their response directly in a TinyMCE editor with formatting controls, live word count, and auto-save. Text submissions have a 50,000-character limit.
  • Student’s Choice: Students see both options and choose their preferred submission method. This is useful for assignments where either a written response or a document would be acceptable.

File Settings

When the submission type includes file uploads, the following settings are available:

Allowed File Types: Choose which file formats students can upload. Supported types include PDF, DOCX, PPTX, TXT, RTF, ODT, JPG, JPEG, PNG, and GIF. All uploads go through six layers of security validation including extension checks, MIME type verification, and dangerous file blocking.

Maximum File Size: The largest file a student can upload per file, in megabytes. The default is 10 MB. Note that your server’s PHP upload_max_filesize and post_max_size settings also apply. You can check these values under Assignments > Settings > Status.

Maximum Files: The number of files a student can include in a single submission. The default is 5.

Resubmission

Allow Resubmission: When enabled, students can submit additional attempts after their initial submission. This is useful for assignments where students should be able to improve based on feedback.

Maximum Resubmissions: The number of additional attempts allowed (default: 1). Students see their full submission history with feedback for each attempt.

Status

Assignments have three status options:

  • Draft: The assignment is not visible to students. Use this while you’re still working on the assignment content.
  • Published: The assignment is live and students can submit work.
  • Archived: The assignment is no longer accepting submissions but existing data is preserved.

Categories

You can organize assignments into categories for easier management. Categories are managed under Assignments > Categories. When creating or editing an assignment, you can assign it to one or more categories.
