Introducing PressPrimer Quiz 2.0

We’re excited to announce that version 2.0 of PressPrimer Quiz is now available on WordPress.org! This is a huge release, not only because it adds several important features to our free quiz plugin, but because it also adds support for a suite of new add-ons that completely transform what’s possible with assessments in WordPress.

If you’re already using PressPrimer Quiz, update through your WordPress dashboard. If you haven’t tried it out yet, there’s never been a better time! With this release, PressPrimer Quiz becomes the most capable quiz plugin for learning and performance assessment in WordPress.

Here’s what’s new.

Condensed Mode

The default quiz layout in version 1.0 of PressPrimer Quiz was designed for readability. The three visual themes we bundled had generous whitespace, clear separation between elements, and lots of padding. Still, sometimes the themes we bundled could take up too much space, especially vertically. Each of the three themes now offers a “Condensed” mode, which reduces spacing and combines some visual elements into a more unified layout. On mobile, navigation becomes a sticky footer so students don’t have to scroll to move between questions.

You can enable condensed mode globally in PressPrimer Quiz > Settings > Appearance near the bottom of the page. Look for the Display Density setting. It can also be set on an individual quiz basis by editing a quiz and changing the Display Density drop-down value.

All three themes (Default, Modern, and Minimal) fully support condensed mode. Touch targets still remain the same size, focus indicators stay visible, and screen reader support is unchanged. Condensed mode doesn’t compromise usability, and for many sites, that option will be the preferred quiz layout.

LearnPress Integration

Version 1.0 of PressPrimer Quiz already supported LearnDash, Tutor LMS, and LifterLMS. Version 2.0 adds LearnPress to the list of LMS plugin integrations, meaning PressPrimer Quiz now supports four of the most popular WordPress LMS platforms. All support is in the free version too; integrations don’t require paid upgrades.

The integration works as you might expect. When editing a LearnPress lesson, you’ll see a metabox where you can select any (published) PressPrimer Quiz. The quiz selector is searchable, so quiz selection is fast even if you have hundreds of quizzes. Once selected, the quiz appears at the end of your lesson content.

You can also require users to pass the quiz before marking the lesson complete by enabling the “Require quiz pass to complete lesson”. This overrides the default LearnPress button to complete a lesson and won’t let users move forward until they pass.

Require Login

In version 1.0 of PressPrimer Quiz, quizzes were always available to both logged in and logged out users. If users weren’t signed in, they were given the option of entering an email address before starting the quiz. Doing so allowed visitors to resume quizzes at a later time. In version 2.0, there’s now a proper login requirement. As an administrator, you can visit PressPrimer Quiz > Settings > General, then change options in the Guest Access section to one of three modes:

1. Allow guests to access quizzes with optional entry of an email address (the 1.0 behavior)
2. Allow guests to access quizzes, but only if they enter an email
3. Require users to log in to access quizzes.

This behavior can be overridden at the quiz level, so you can choose which quizzes should be restricted to logged in users and which quizzes should be available to guests.

When login is required, the quiz start page displays a customizable message and a login button instead of the Start Quiz button. After logging in, users are returned to the quiz that they were trying to access.

Support for Premium Add-Ons

Version 2.0 also introduces infrastructure for extending PressPrimer Quiz with premium add-ons. The free plugin remains fully functional and unlimited on its own, but now the capabilities can be extended if you need more than what the free version offers. Premium features include support for things like student groups, quiz assignments, import/export tools, audit logging, xAPI support, several new reports, white-label branding, and more. (And everything mentioned will be available right away in the 2.0 releases!)

What’s Next

After the imminent release of the PressPrimer Quiz premium add-ons, we’ll start work on version 2.1. It will include several new, important features, and it will be available within the next 6 weeks.
