How to Use xAPI with WordPress Quizzes

If you’re running quizzes on a WordPress LMS site and you’ve been told you need “xAPI support”, you’re not alone and you’re definitely in the right place. In this post we’ll talk about what xAPI is, why it matters for your quizzes, and what your options are in WordPress.

What is xAPI?

xAPI (also called Experience API or Tin Can API) is an elearning specification that determines how learning systems (like your WordPress elearning site) send data to a central database called a Learning Record Store (LRS). Having this central repository allows organizations to collect and report on all learning activities from one place.

Every xAPI statement has the same simple structure: an “actor” (who completed the learning activity), a “verb” (what they did) and an “object” (what they did it to). For a quiz, that translates into something like, “Ryan passed Quiz 123 with a score of 80%”. The statement gets sent to your LRS, where it’s stored with activities from other learning systems. xAPI is the standard that allows organizations to track learning from practically anywhere in a consistent way.

Why xAPI matters for quizzes

If your quizzes live on a WordPress site and that’s the only place you need to see results, you might not need xAPI support. Most quiz plugins (including our free PressPrimer Quiz plugin) store results in the WordPress database and offer their own reporting.

xAPI becomes more important when any of the following apply:

1. Compliance requires central records. Regulated industries (like healthcare, finance, and government) might require training data to be stored in an official system of record. That’s where an LRS comes in.
2. You’re tracking learning across multiple platforms. Maybe your organization uses WordPress for testing, but has separate systems for video-based and instructor-led training.
3. Your enterprise LMS expects xAPI data. Maybe you use other reporting or HR platforms that require that learning data be fed into a corporate LMS or LRS.
4. You need audit trails. xAPI statements have timestamps, can’t be changed once stored, and follow a defined standard. That makes them well suited for compliance and audit tracking.

xAPI support in WordPress

There’s currently very limited support for xAPI in the WordPress ecosystem. Here’s where things stand:

None of LearnDash, Tutor LMS, LifterLMS, LearnPress, or other major LMS plugins offer native xAPI support. If you need xAPI support, you’ll need a plugin like GrassBlade xAPI Companion or Tin Canny Reporting (only for LearnDash) to get xAPI support. Those plugins focus on embedding and tracking xAPI and SCORM content from external authoring tools though, not on sending native quiz data to an LRS.

H5P has its own xAPI implementation, but it’s limited to H5P content types.

Standalone quiz plugins don’t offer xAPI support at all. They keep quiz data in WordPress.

How PressPrimer Quiz Handles xAPI

The School add-on for PressPrimer Quiz includes built-in xAPI support that’s designed to send native quiz data to an external LRS. You don’t need to use an elearning authoring tool, and you don’t need extra plugins. If a student completes a quiz in PressPrimer Quiz, that data goes to your LRS.

Setup is easy and only takes a few seconds. Navigate to PressPrimer Quiz > Settings, then click on the xAPI tab. You just need to enter 3 values from your LRS provider: an endpoint URL, a username, and a password. It works with any standards-compliant Learning Record Store, including Learning Locker, SCORM Cloud, Watershed, and GrassBlade Cloud LRS.

Once connected, you choose what data gets sent to the LRS. Users can be identified by email address, username, or an account-based identifier. PressPrimer can send quiz-level data only, so completion records, or it can include question-level data for more detailed analytics.

Statements are queued and sent in the background, so quiz completion is never delayed by your LRS and users won’t notice any performance hit. If a statement fails (like due to a network issue, LRS downtime, or incorrect credentials), PressPrimer Quiz will automatically retry sending, and you can view the queue status at any time.
